Working and service dogs: software for training records, deployments and tracking work

Search and rescue, detection, law-enforcement and sport dogs train systematically, and every session and deployment has to be recorded. Paper logbooks are gradually being replaced by software that keeps training history, reminds you about certifications, records GPS tracks and helps supervisors see a team's readiness. Here is what is available.

In short: what is on the market

Record-keeping platforms for teams and units

DogBase is built for search and rescue, law-enforcement, sport and service teams: fast session logging, health and results tracking, AI summaries, custom training types, PDF export and groups for collaboration. According to the developers, teams in more than 30 countries use it. K9Codex (SYSTALOG) (formerly K9 Manager) records training, certifications, deployments and readiness with an audit log and roles for field logging, supervision and administration.

For law-enforcement units there is PackTrack: records for obedience, apprehension, searches, tracking and detection, GPS routes and a handler map for supervisors. A simpler option is the RAM K9 Training: Dog Logbook from Ray Allen Manufacturing with multiple dogs and CSV export; reviews are mixed, and some users find it too basic.

Tracking work and GPS

For mantrailing, IGP and blood tracking it matters to see exactly how the dog worked the track. DogTracks records the GPS track, length, time and article positions and overlays the layer's and the dog's tracks on a map. tracking-dog for iPhone by Doegel GmbH also stores tracks, marks articles, analyzes accuracy and records terrain and weather.

Software for professional trainers and businesses

Trainers who work with clients can use management software: PupManager with scheduling, notes, homework videos and a branded client app, Heeldash with exercise scoring and progress charts, and PetPocketbook with scheduling and billing. Larger pet care businesses (boarding, daycare, grooming, training) have Gingr, MoeGo, Time To Pet and RunLoyal, with scheduling, payments, client portals and analytics.

How to choose

1. Scale. A personal logbook, a team platform or business software are different classes of product.

2. Agency requirements. Check which records and reports your organization needs and whether the export format fits.

3. Data and access. Find out where data is stored, who can see it and how roles are separated.

4. Trial. Most platforms offer a demo or trial — test them on real training sessions.
