Dog training apps: lessons, clicker and puppy routines

Bringing home a puppy or an adult rescue dog is a joy and a lot of questions: how to potty train, teach loose-leash walking and help the dog stay calm at home alone. Training apps won't replace a real trainer, but they help you practice regularly, in small steps and with a plan. Here is what is out there.

All the tools in this article are collected in the "Dog training" subcategory of the "My Home" section of our directory.

> Important. Training methods vary. Choose methods that avoid pain and fear. Serious behavior problems (aggression, severe anxiety) are best discussed with a trainer or a veterinarian.

In short: what these apps do

Daily programs and video lessons

Most apps are based on positive reinforcement: the dog gets a reward for the right behavior. Dogo offers daily training tasks, video instructions and a built-in clicker, and according to its descriptions you can send a training video and get feedback from a trainer. Puppr has more than a hundred video lessons from trainer Sara Carson, with a strong focus on tricks.

Pupford is a large library of video courses; according to reviews, the basic 30-day course is free and deeper material is paid. Hundeo builds a personal plan and shows one exercise a day, while PawChamp combines training, behavior and care in one plan with expert chat. Woofz brings together lessons and a daily care log.

For puppies

The first months matter most for socialization and habits. Zigzag is entirely about puppies: short lessons by breed and age and, according to the developers, a 12-week puppy development program. Routine logs keep you on track: Pup to Date shows when the puppy last went out, ate or had medication and has an Apple Watch app, and Doggy Time records potty, walks, feeding and training and lets you share records with family.

Clicker and whistle on your phone

Clicker training works like this: the click marks the exact moment of the right behavior, then the dog gets a reward. iTrainer Dog Whistle & Clicker is a free clicker and whistle for iPhone with adjustable frequency and Apple Watch support. Dogo has a built-in clicker too.

How to choose

1. Define the goal. A puppy and basic manners, tricks or a specific problem — each needs a different app.

2. Look at the methods. Choose programs based on positive reinforcement, without pain, fear or punishment.

3. Consistency beats duration. A few minutes every day achieve more than an hour once a week.

4. Know the limits. If your dog shows aggression, strong fear or a sudden change in behavior, see a trainer or a veterinarian: sometimes the cause is health-related.
